Winter Coats for Tibetan Students

ZangPao—the traditional Tibetan coat—is best for the winter on the Tibetan Plateau. Located in northwestern China, the Tibetan plateau is also called “the roof of the world,” because it stands over 3 miles above sea level and is surrounded by imposing mountain ranges that harbor the world’s two highest summits, Mount Everest and K2.

The weather in Tibet is often referred to as “four seasons in a day,” with a large temperature difference between day and night. The winter is extremely cold. The daytime temperatures rarely rise above 32 °F (or 0 °C) in many places there and drop to below 14 °F (or -10 °C) at night.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we set up 8 book corners (with 1,600 books and 8 bookcases) at Sewei Central Primary School in Ganzi, Sichuan in 2017. All students of this school are Tibetan. All students, from kindergarten to sixth grade, live at school, because their homes are too far for them to commute daily or weekly. Most students go home about once a month.

When we delivered bookcases and books to the Tibetan students at Sewei in last November, the school was already covered in snow. We learned that the school had frequent power outages, which made it tough for students especially in the long cold winter.

Visit here to learn more about this school and the book corners set up in 2017.

Many schools in Tibet still do not have heating systems in place and do not have stable electricity. ZangPao is the best clothing in winter there. Students can use it as a coat during the day and a bed cover at night. Tibetan students all longed for ZangPao; many students, however, cannot afford one due to the financial difficulties of their family.

Thanks to our donors, we were able to bring warmth to the Tibetan students in the past years!
