Fun Contests and Music Classes
Through fun contests, CUEAF motivates disadvantaged students of rural schools, improves their cognitive abilities, builds problem-solving and teamwork skills, and sparks their interests in different fields. Students love these fun contests and games. They had never participated in such activities and enjoyed games like jigsaw puzzles that they had never experienced.
- Writing contests encourage students to read more, teach them how to express themselves orally and in writing, boost their creativity, and improve their writing skills.
- English contests give students opportunities to practice English outside classrooms. Some teachers directed short plays, which offered a fun way for students to learn and practice English.
- Science contests encourage students to explore science phenomena in daily life, foster their creativity and problem solving skills, and help students develop a spirit of scientific inquiry.
- Geographic contests motivate students to learn about the history, geography, and culture of other countries.
The short videos required for English, science, and geographic contests also help students improve their public speaking skills and increase their self-confidence. - Jigsaw puzzles and other brain games help students develop perseverance and problem-solving skills, improve concentration, foster spatial thinking capabilities, and build teamwork skills.
Rural schools usually do not have teachers who are professionally trained in teaching music and arts courses. Due to the lack of teaching capacity and resources, these courses are often used for essential courses, such as math or Chinese, at many schools. When music classes are offered, teachers in other disciplines often play recordings of some songs for students to listen to and perhaps sing along with.
In order to enable young teachers in other disciplines to offer basic music classes, we offer training in music in collaboration with our partner organizations. Through training, these teachers gain basic knowledge in music and music appreciation, and learn basic skills to play a musical instrument. After training, teachers bring musical instruments to the class and share what they have learned with their students. This program allows students of rural schools to see, listen to, and touch musical instruments for the first time. Students are able to learn how different instruments sound and play, and gain basic knowledge in music and music appreciation.
