School Improvements
Many of us often think about the schools we attended as children. What we miss is not only our childhood friends from school back then, but also the classroom, the blackboard, our old desks, the playground, and everything in between. For many kids in the rural schools of China, the memory of their school will not be very enjoyable. Many rural schools, even those that are only several driving hours away from a city, still have very poor facilities and are lacking the basic teaching equipment. Shabby windows and doors, broken blackboards, dried-up wells without drinkable water, bathrooms with no flushing systems or running water…. Problems like these are very common at rural schools. Playgrounds become muddy and therefore unusable, every time it rains. Schools with a large number of left-behind children often have to provide dorms and a cafeteria for students because these students often live too far away to commute back and forth each day. However, the physical condition of such dorms and cafeteria is rather poor. The photos below were all taken from our school visits.
More importantly, poor school conditions are failing students! Better school conditions do more than provide a healthy learning environment for kids; instead, better conditions can boost student attendance and achievement, and reduce teachers’ turnover rates. Research has confirmed that the differences in school conditions can explain 10-15% of the differences in test scores—even after controlling for the demographics of students. Improved school conditions are also often associated with fewer behavioral problems among students.
